This book is timed to coincide with the reopening of The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū in October 2016, after an extensive redevelopment project. It features a selection of works from the gallery’s permanent collection, chosen by Gallery Director Julie Catchpole and Bishop Suter Trust Chairperson Craig Potton.
They had at their disposal a wonderfully eclectic array of art works amassed over more than a century. The choices they made focused largely around people and places, both within Aotearoa New Zealand and Europe.
The presentation of art works juxtaposes the local with the exotic; works by artists of national or international repute with the lesser known; and historical with contemporary. The accompanying descriptions of the art works likewise tell stories of places and personalities, and range from personal perspectives and anecdotes to art historical information.
The thematic threads of people and places link the art works but so too do the links between the artists; that of teacher and student, influencer and the inspired.
