Description

THIS TITLE IS NOW OUT OF PRINT.

Stanley Palmer is one of New Zealand’s most respected and enduring artists. Best known for his editioned prints, monoprints and paintings, he is strongly associated with locations along and off the east coast: Parengarenga Harbour, Matauri Bay, the Poor Knights Islands, Great Barrier Island, Mahurangi Peninsula. Many of his classic prints are of Auckland in the 1970s, before motorways divided the city and the old areas of Newton and Ponsonby became gentrified. More recent works focus on the easternmost parts of New Zealand—the East Cape area and the Chatham Islands.

East is a sampling of 136 of Stanley Palmer’s works ranging across four decades. From early woodcuts through Palmer’s unique bamboo engravings, to his evocative monoprints and paintings, this extensive collection celebrates the work of one of our most-admired and prolific artists and also our own edge of the Pacific.

about the author

Stanley Palmer was born in Turua, near Thames, on the Hauraki Plains, in 1936 and moved to Auckland with his family five years later. After training as a teacher, he worked as an art advisor in primary schools. He became well-known in the 1970s for his prints, which used an innovative combination of lithography and bamboo engraving. Palmer has been a full-time artist since 1969 and has had numerous exhibitions throughout New Zealand. His works hang in countless homes, schools and workplaces, public and private buildings, and galleries. A collection of his West Coast works, West, was published in 2000, and To the Harbour, a children’s book he wrote and illustrated, appeared in 2007. Stanley Palmer lives and works in Mount Eden, Auckland.
