Ray Salisbury is the great-great-grandson of the first European Motueka Valley pioneer, John Park Salisbury, whose brother Thomas discovered the Tableland in 1863.  The author was raised in Auckland where he trained as a graphic designer.  After 12 years of teaching design in high school, he is now a professional photographer and tutor based in Nelson.
