The Mount Aspiring region is special. Mellow grassy valleys lead to backbreaking grinds through step bush to the prize of wild open snowfields and rugged, rocky and icy summits.

The climbing ranges from hands-in-pocket strolls to steep technical classics. This is a user-friendly area, almost as if it was created for mountaineering.

The geographical scope of this guide takes in the head of the Dart River to the south, through the central Aspiring region and to the mountains rising from the Wilkin and Young valleys to the north. This is a broader area than covered by the original Mount Aspiring guidebook.

about the authors

Allan Uren moved to Wanaka in 1977 and his proximity to the Aspiring region germinated the mountaineering seed. This seed had lain dormant during his childhood, living under the shadow of the Takitimu Mountains in Southland. He has climbed in Alaska and elsewhere in the USA, but prefers the mountains of home. His ways of supporting his climbing habit are varied – he has been a painter and decorator, abseil access technician, kitchen-hand, ski-patroller and more recently a freelance writer. He has had articles published in The Climber, New Zealand Alpine Journal, New Zealand Geographic, Wilderness and Adventure magazines. He currently lives, loves and climbs from his base in Wanaka.

Mark Watson’s enthusiasm for the outdoors was fostered at a young age in Wellington’s stormy Tararua Range and on the volcanoes of the Central North Island. Mark is a photographer and graphic designer, specialising in landscape, adventure, wilderness and travel photography. Mark Watson has spent most of his life tramping, climbing and cycling among the hills and ranges of New Zealand. His images have been widely published in magazines and calendars.
